Long before there were desktops and servers, the only computers used for business were mainframes with IBM leading the pack. Mainframes used to occupy a large area in a building. But with modern technology, they are now becoming smaller in their footprint.
Mainframes are still around. A recent article on zdnet.com states that new mainframes are driving IBM sales. The IBM information center website has this to say, "In banking, finance, health care, insurance, utilities, government, and a multitude of other public and private enterprises, the mainframe computer continues to be the foundation of modern business." There had been a lot of changes to mainframe technologies that they can also be used as servers in a web enabled world.
Like all computers, the mainframe has hardware and software. The hardware provides high efficiency, reliability and availability. With the advantage of decades behind it, mainframe software are mature. Its security environment is one of the best.
