The use of technology in the classroom has long been an uphill battle. Whether it has been acquiring and keeping listening centers functional in an early years classroom, or the acquisition and then training in use of a smart board, educators increasingly need to become tech savvy at a pace so rapid we often fail to use the technology we have in a constructive way. There are many roadblocks to keeping technology useful in the educational system, whether it’s the fear of technology, the lack of infrastructure in a school, or simply just the way that technology is presented as an option rather than a mandatory skill like math, or reading.
Functional or Just Fun?
Take the basic organization of computer or technology periods in an average school. You are slotted a predetermined amount of computer usage time in a lab that will handle (in most cases) all of your class. In order to model an appropriate use of technology there needs to be access to the technology that is needed, when it is needed. It is critical that these periods are not being used to simply waste time on the Internet or play games. Technology has stronger and greater purpose than this.
