The phone rings. The recipient of the call does not recognize the number on her call display, She answers anyway, thinking it could be the important call she's been anticipating all day. A male Asian accent informs her that he is calling because, "your daughter kicked my dog….". The recipient recognizes this as a well-known recording taken from the internet. She hangs up in disgust. An hour later, the phone rings again. Recognizing the number. the recipient answers the phone. She hears an angry male voice, yelling threats that he is "coming over …to get you NOW!". This time, the number displayed is that of the recipient's friend. The friend never made the call. Someone else did, someone who knows both parties....

If you've ever received calls like this; calls from phone numbers you may or may not recognize, with strange voices and silly or disturbing recordings, you may been "spoofed". These days, in the age of prank websites, VoIP, iPhones, Blackberries, Androids and all of their applications, we are subject to a new version of a very old trick, one with alarming implications.

How It Works

At the very least, the online and app pranks, while not new, afford would-be pranksters a resource for interrupting and inconveniencing people. They are designed to provide hours of amusement for callers but they can be annoying, highly distressing, sometimes even hazardous, for the recipients of the calls.
