Since General Joshua Bean had left San Diego he had opened the first saloon in San Gabriel in the Mission San Gabriel church building. Joshua had also “married” Cristovala, a 12 year old Californio girl he had “seduced” away from Reyes Feliz; the brother-in-law and criminal partner of warlord Insurrecto Joaquin Murieta.

Joshua gave Roy a job at Headquarters, his combination; saloon, stage stop, boarding stable, general store, gambling hall, race track, dog and cock fighting ring, bookie shop, brothel and vaudeville house. Joshua appointed Roy a lieutenant in the California Volunteers state militia; the San Diego criminal charges were not pressed.

On Sunday, November 7, 1852 following a typical Sunday of horse racing, gambling, dog and cock fighting, drinking, brawling, circus acts and general revelry at the Headquarters, a drunken Joshua Bean wanted to have sex with his now 13 year old, post partum “wife.” A domestic dispute occurred.

Militia Major General Joshua Bean is Murdered in San Gabriel

Cristovala fled into the night with her infant child. There was an altercation between Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Bean on the street, in front of the residence of Jose Rico where Joaquin Murieta, Reyes Feliz and Felipe Read were guests.

The dark of the night was rent by the sounds of a woman screaming. Two shots roared in the night; one struck Joshua Bean in the chest. Joshua’s Colt was in his hand as he staggered toward the Rico house, firing three shots as he collapsed calling “Rico, Rico, Rico.” One of the shots fired wounded Cristovala.

Joshua Bean died the next morning. Cristovala received medical attention, then left town with the baby.

A Vigilance committee investigated the Bean murder. Among the suspects was Reyes Feliz who under questioning confessed to rustling horses with Joaquin Murieta.
