Where is Emily Post for the Digital Age? The rulebook has been reinvented with the addition of so many ways to communicate but it is important to think about how to apply the old rules of courtesy to an ever changing digital world.
Handheld Devices
How often is too often to check your phone or e-mail while in a business or social setting? Some would say to check your device at all is showing a lack of respect and to actually answer e-mails, texts or a phone call is just plain rude. If you do feel the need to take a call or check your e-mail, ask the people you are with if they mind. That is the polite thing to do or at the vary least if a call comes in that you cannot avoid, apologize for the interruption. An even better idea is to excuse yourself and do a check when you go to the bathroom! Setting the device to vibrate is good etiquette and even better would be to turn it off completely.
When answering a phone in public the main thing to remember is exactly that: you are in public. Most people in a café do not want to hear the details of a night out and definitely should not hear the details of private business dealings. Busses and trains can be very confined spaces and can seem even more so if there is someone having a loud mobile phone conversation so keep your voice low or wait until there is a more opportune time to make a call.
