In the spirit of the holidays, the U.S. Coast Guard has published a boating gift list for boaters who have been especially good this year. One gift item highlighted by this lifesaving organization is the purchase of a marine global positioning system (GPS) navigation unit. This priority is prompted in part on the planned termination of the Loran-C navigation system in the United States during early 2010.

Speaking of the boater’s Christmas gift list in a press release, Coast Guard Chief of Media Relations, Lieutenant Commander Chris O'Neil says, “Nothing says 'I love you' to a mariner like the gift of a marine GPS navigation, a Coast Guard approved life jacket, boating safety course or 406 MHz electronic position indicating radio beacon. Regardless of the occasion or holiday, the gifts we recommend this year can save a loved one's life, making them the perfect gift this season, or throughout the year. Diamonds are pretty, and big-screen, high-definition televisions are great for watching the big game, but they won't help you prevent a boating accident, or survive after you've been in one.”
