Enter Myakka River State Park via State Road 72, about nine miles southeast of Sarasota, Florida. The Visitor Center on the left presents exhibits that explain the wildlife and its habitat. But the real fun is getting outdoors to participate in this natural world. A scenic drive winds through the pines and oak trees toward the shore of the Upper Myakka Lake where easy parking can be found near the Myakka Outpost and many of the activities.
Kids and adults especially enjoy taking an Air Boat Ride on one of the world’s largest airboats, named the Myakka Maiden or Gator Gal. The shallow-draft airboats can take visitors into the lake's grassy areas where traditional boats aren't able to go. The naturalist driver provides a narration on the park’s environment and its inhabitants including majestic eagles, the lake's anhingas, osprey and regal, red-headed sandhill cranes. And everyone on the boat watches for the alligators. Depending on the weather, visitors can see them sunning by the dozens on the banks of the lake or swimming alongside the boat.
