The Outer Banks are a popular tourist destination for many reasons. The 200-mile chain of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina has plenty of beachfront, wild horses and lighthouses. These beacons of the past still stand proud along the beaches of North Carolina. As visitors make plans to vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks, here is some information about its lighthouses.
Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Completed in 1875, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse’s red brick exterior was restored over three decades beginning in the 1980s. The lighthouse was home to a keeper, and also an assistant keeper beginning in the 1920s. Today, the assistant keeper’s quarters serves as the visitor center.
Visitors can tour the lighthouse site and tower daily. Currituck Beach Lighthouse is open throughout the year, except for the week before Easter and Thanksgiving weekend.
